DV2027 paused by President Trumph, due to Brown University shooting
U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, has instructed the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to pause the DV2027 program. No date has been provided by the US Government for when the program becomes active again.
A Portuguese national, Claudio Manuel Neves Valente, aged 48, is suspected of being the shooter who killed two students and wounded nine students at Brown University on Saturday December 13th, 2025. He is also suspected of being the killer that entered a MIT professors house and killed him the same day. Valente was found dead Thursday December 18, 2025 from a self-inflicted gunshot.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said, Valente entered the US through the Diversity Visa Lottery program in 2017 and was granted a green card.
The Diversity Visa lotter is enshrined in US law. No President can cancel a law that Congress has passed, so this is a temporary pause to ensure that all applicants in this program will be vetted appropriately going forward.
